Shaping the Future of North American Transportation Through Digital Infrastructure
Transportation in the United States is on the cusp of a major digital transformation. Rapid advances in technologies like artificial intelligence, 5G connectivity, blockchain, and the internet of things are converging to reshape the country’s transportation networks. To successfully navigate this complex shift, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) needs a comprehensive digital infrastructure strategy.
A new study,”Digital Infrastructure Strategy Report: Shaping the future of transportation in the United States,” from the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) aims to provide guidance for DOT’s digital infrastructure policy. It examines how enhanced connectivity, data sharing, and digital systems can make transportation safer, more efficient, and more equitable.
What is Digital Infrastructure?
First, it’s important to define what we mean by “digital infrastructure.” The report suggests it encompasses:
- Technology and innovation: 5G networks, intelligent transportation systems, connected and autonomous vehicles, drones, electric vehicles, and associated infrastructure.
- Standards and architecture: Data sharing protocols, cybersecurity measures, interoperability…
