Northvolt, a European company founded in 2016, is pioneering a radically different model of battery manufacturing. Using renewable hydropower and incorporating recycling into production, Northvolt aims to produce the world’s greenest lithium-ion batteries with minimal carbon emissions. After establishing its flagship Gigafactory Northvolt Ett in northern Sweden, Northvolt has set its sights on global expansion to keep up with surging battery demand, especially in North America.
Northvolt’s Carbon-Neutral Battery Manufacturing
Northvolt’s fundamental innovation is manufacturing batteries using 100% renewable energy from day one. This starts with location selection. Northvolt Ett is situated in the Nordic region with abundant carbon-free hydropower. The factory is designed for vertical integration, with raw material refining, cell manufacturing, and recycling combined on-site, minimizing emissions from transportation.
State-of-the-art process optimizations also enhance energy efficiency. For instance, Northvolt reduces electricity usage during cell fabrication by recuperating heat for reuse. Further, dry room humidity controls cut electricity for ventilation. Overall, Northvolt aims to reduce energy consumption per battery pack by 20% compared to current averages.
But Northvolt goes beyond factory operations to address the battery life cycle.
